Football (Soccer) is one of the most popular games in the U.K. and it has been played for hundreds of years. The U.K. Football traditional league system has got hundreds of teams. However, a premier league has got only 20 most elite teams from all over the U.K. Some of them are the Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.
Cricket is the national sport of the U.K. Cricket was made in U.K., and has spread to hundreds of countries in the world. It got its name in the 18th century when players made up the rules on Lord’s Cricket ground. Cricket is played on Sundays from April to August. Some matches can last for 4 or 5 days.
Rugby is also a popular sport in the U.K. It got its name because the game was first played in the town called Rugby. It is similar to football, but played with an oval ball. Players can carry the ball and tackle each other. The best rugby teams compete in the Super League final each September. American Football derived from game from Rugby.
Badminton is the most popular racket game in U.K. Badminton has a long tradition in U.K.. From the year 1893.
Tennis: Wimbledon is the most popular Tennis championship. It started in U.K. in the 19th Century. It begins on the nearest Monday to June 22nd. It attracts many tourists. And it is difficult to find tickets for the event. Tennis is the 2nd most popular racket game in the U.K. It is traditional for visitors to eat strawberries and cream whilst they watch the tennis.
Golf is also a popular game in the U.K. It is usually played in England and Scotland. Golf was invented in Scotland. There are more than 400 golf courses in Scotland. The most important golf club is in the town of St. Andrews.
Motor racing. Cars have been raced ever since they were invented. The first race was organized in 1887 in Paris, France. Motor racing championship is called Grand Prix. The British Grand Prix is in Silverston. And it is usually in July.
Other popular sports in the U.K. are: baseball, basketball, field hockey, wrestling, volleyball (netball), horse racing, polo, table tennis (ping pong), rowing (boat race), and fishing (angling).
